Former Hyundai Mobis Avarientos made his debut in a Shinshu uniform.
The second round of the 99th Emperor’s Cup was held from the 22nd to the 24th, and the Emperor’s Cup is an FA Cup involving Japanese teams such as B2nd League, B3rd League, and universities, boasting a long history.
All Korean leaguers playing in Japan also participated in the Emperor’s Cup, and Lee Dae-sung (Mikawa) and Yang Jae-min (Sendai) were given a lot of time to compete with each other, and Jang Min-guk (Nagasaki) and Jang Moon-ho (Kagawa) also made their Japanese debuts, and Park Se-jin (Kanazawa) also played their first game.
Here is another player to keep an eye on. This is Ronjay Abarrientos, of the Shinshu Brave Warriors. Abarrientos played for Ulsan Hyundai Mobis last season, averaging 29 minutes and 11 seconds in 51 regular league games, averaging 13.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists. As a result, he won the Rookie of the Year Award at the awards ceremony at the end of the season. He was the first Filipino national to receive the Rookie of the Year Award.
However, Abarrientos suddenly refused to join the Hyundai Mobis team this offseason. KBL has limited the compensation of Asian quarter players to $160,000 (approximately 200 million won) starting this season and requested the termination of their contracts as obstacles to salary increases have arisen. In the end, Hyundai Mobis announced Abarrientos as a retired player, and he signed with Shinshu and advanced to the B. League.
Avarientos also made his debut wearing the Shinshu uniform at the Emperor’s Cup Cup. He averaged 7.7 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in three games against Ehime Orange Vikings on the 22nd, Shinagawa City Basketball Team on the 23rd, and Nagasaki Belka on the 24th. Shinshu experienced the pain of defeat and elimination in the round of 16 against Nagasaki.
Abarrientos’ performance was not satisfactory at all. He attempted a total of 28 field goals in 3 games, but his offensive success rate was poor, with only 7 hitting the rim. He also looked shaky, recording a total of 10 turnovers. The bad plays he showed at Hyundai Mobis, such as excessive shot attempts and frequent turnovers, were the same.
Avarientos left Korea and headed to Japan. Although it is not a satisfactory debut performance, there is still time until the season starts. I am curious about Abarrientos’ play and whether he can prove his worth in the B.League following the KBL.
